In their own words:
After the surprise success of our first little Jazzanova EP, (a white-label we hand stamped in Jürgen's bedroom three years ago), we got somewhat high spirited and enthusiastic about things. In a very naive way, we went about trying to do what everyone else did before us - found a label. To be honest, it was a real trainee-program. The ups and downs included moving office three times, losing money here, gaining experience there...
Why did we do it?
We saw the necessity to establish a common platform, or just simply an urban infrastructure for good music in our beloved hometown of Berlin. Especially for all those friends and homies that supported us along the way. We opened an office, organized a regular club-night, built a studio, etc. It was a slow but steady process.
The Sonar Kollektiv evolved into a real Mothership, establishing a musical community open for all. Our structuring allows us to make the artists into A&R-managers of their own sub-labels, by giving them the major role, leaving us the space to shape and guide. Thanks to this unique structuring we can oversee how all the musicians and producers intermingle and grow together: be it Pathless programming percussion for Dixon, Meitz playing Fender Rhodes here and there, or Axel, recording, mixing and joking around with the vocalists.
The music released on Sonar Kollektiv reflects our love of different musical styles, be it R&B or Rock, 2Step or simply Jazz.
We are happy to present this to you on this compilation that showcases both Sonar Kollektiv classics as well as the unreleased material of upcoming acts. Slip it into your home stereo, car stereo, hi-fi, or whatever listening contraption you may possess and enjoy...
Alexander Barck & Daniel W. Best

1:
Pathless - Goddess - 07:51
This drum & percussion project is responsible for most of Jazzanova's and Extended Spirit's rhythm architecture, rooted in Afro, Brasil, Latin and Jazz. Heavy playing - no loops.
-
2:
Soul Quality Quartet - I'm Not Here - 04:55
Soul Quality Quartet was formed in '93 and started off as a jazz band with strong influences from latin-orientated artists such as Cal Tjader, Willy Bobo and Mongo Santamaria. Brazilian rhythms mixed up with jazzy harmonies and a new spirit - this is the modern sound of the Soul Quality Quartet.

3:
DJ Ghe - Afutatam - 01:46
So, who is DJ Ghe? The man as you might gather is a HipHop DJ (since 1992). A HipHop DJ who just simply needed his own tools. And, what else? Well, he is part of a HipHop-Hippie-Commune in the Berlin neighbourhood Prenzlauer Berg. Their band is called the "The12 Dingo". This commune is also into clothing-manufacturing, graffiti and I don't know what else.

4:
Stereoton - Kick Me Off - 03:49
Well, what should we say? Late nite vibes - This tune shows the other side of the HipHop formation Stereoton feat. Clara Hill on vocals. Clara is one of the lead vocalists on the upcoming Jazzanova Album.

5:
Daniel Paul & Tobe - My Day - 05:55
Daniel Paul (also Cabinet Rec.) got hold of two charming ladies from Cleveland, Nicky + Heather, to produce a wonderful spoken word ballad (also including the groundbreaking voice of Vikter Duplaix) with great bass arrangements and soulful fender rhodes business. (also available on vinyl)

6:
Extended Spirit - Illicity Part 2 - 09:18
Stefan Leisering + Axel Reinemer started way back in the 80ies producing HipHop (Cora E, Fettes Brot, Spax and others). In the mid-90ies the Jazzanova crew was completed with them. Extended Spirit earned an international reputation for creating organic-sounding productions with a lot of love for details. This track is the uptempo version of Illicity Pt. 1, which was initially released on the first Solid Water EP in 1998.

7:
Meitz - Can You Live - 04:49
You probably remember Meitz for his Africa EP, the title track of which has appeared on numerous compilations in the last year. After founding his live band (the Meitz Septet), he's now incorporating his musicians in his studio-work, as well - Can You Live features guitar, double bass, and the vocalist Vido from the tune Africa and even a tap dancer! This is an edited version from Meitz forthcoming second EP.

8:
Moon - Twisted Soul - 03:25
Strange hybrid business combining both HipHop and Rock attitudes - a timeless ballad.
-
9:
Fleck - Tears - 04:34
Guitarman Nick Gloeckner comes from the professional jazz-musicianside, but more and more he becomes involved into sample-based music. The wonderful mood catched us from the very first moment - and again and again...

10:
Justine Electra - I Feel Like Crying - 04:20
One day Justine came into our office with something like a demo of her own songs. She just moved to Berlin, from Australia. Her songs where ingenius and self-willed - like Justine herself.
-
11:
Nootropika - Quatre Neuf - 06:13
These guys sent us an email one day, to tell us that they like our music and that they also produce stuff in Friedrichshain, another district of Berlin. Here it is, their first track on the Sonar Kollektiv label. A really deep leftfield jazz creation.

12:
Meitz - (Mayibuye I) Africa (Restless Soul Remix) - 07:50
Since the original Africa became something like a club-hit, last year's October saw the release of a remix EP with contributions by DJ Deep from France, Sonar Kollektiv's Dixon - and by ever-so-restless remixer Restless Soul from the UK.

13:
Ras - Exit Routine - 06:07
Robert Galic walked into our office and asked us if we could send out promotional copies of his records. The second time he walked into our office he came with unreleased stuff. When we heard the tunes we told him that he'd have serious problems if he didn't let us release them. He understood... His creative inspirations come from Jazz, Afro-Cuban music, Dub-Reggae, etc.

14:
Static - Enceladus - 05:12
The man behind "Static" is the drummer/producer Hanno Leichtmann. Sun Ra was a big inspiration for this little electronic adventure.
-
15:
Micatone - Run - 05:25
Micatone is a real band. They paid their dues in all the hotspots in Berlin, combining the spirit of an old jazz-band with new club-music influences of the present. They were especially inspired by Drum and Bass and Broken Beats. Try Lisa's beautiful vocals and run.
