[1] Listen to the podcastA new house masterpiece by Lars Bartkuhn!
When comes to releasing new music, the word trend“ is not part of the vocabulary of Sonar Kollektiv. On the contrary Sonar Kollektiv has a long-standing reputation for releasing records that can pass the test of time. New signature in their staple Musician/Producer/Dj LARS BARTKUHN from Frankfurt shares this philosophy as well. LARS was a passionate music lover from earliest childhood on. After discovering THE BEATLES and BEACH BOYS he deeply fell in love with the music of PAT METHENY, KEITH JARRETT and JOHN COLTRANE to name but a few, and also with countless other styles beyond Jazz such as Soul, funk, Rock, Brazilian music and so on... In the following years LARS worked as a session musician, playing in many different formations from Jazz quartets to Funk crews over to Brazil bands and Fusion combos, where he refined his skills and discovered new vibes in the world of music. His fascination with the deep and soulful side of House and with the music of LARRY HEARD, KERRI CHANDLER, ANTHONY NICHOLSON and RON TRENT amongst many others brought him to create his own label Needs with his brother MAREK and his good friend DJ YANNICK. Needs and the production of the trio rapidly gained recognition from the best Djs and artists worldwide. LARS and his crew have been asked to remix countless producers and bands such as FRANCOIS K, JAZZTRONIK, ENNIO MORRICONE, IAN POOLEY and ATJAZZ and their label Needs became synomyn for open-minded and timeless house music RELATED LINKS:
[1] Check It Out!Inner Soul - A new Roland Appel 12" !
ROLAND started to work on his solo project in 2004 with the aim of bridging the gap between a song and the feelings it carries and a banging house track that could make people dancing for hours. For Dark Soldier (SK158/elektrish) and Unforgiven (SK168/elektrish) he teamed up with sound engineer JAN KRAUSE and delved into his diverse influences from Detroit Techno to Folk over to Soul, Disco and House and produced neo-romantic deep-house tunes with enough drama to tear up the dancefloors. In his third single called Inner Soul (SK178) ROLAND APPEL tells us the origin of his inspiration in musical way. His creativity comes from his inner soul. Creativity is love-making with your soul“. To put this adage into music, ROLAND kept this dreamy deep-house touch intact with once again a grandiose orchestration made of live drums, flourishing layers of strings and pads, soulful female choirs, arpeggiated and modulated stabs of synths and a magical break that will certainely take the crowd to the 7th heaven. Once again it’s ARABA WALTON whose voice underlines and strengthens the feelings of the track. On the flipside ROLAND goes a bit more moody and uptempo with the track New Love. Over a pounding 4/4 bass drum beat, soulful vocals and over his now-trademark live house beats ROLAND added some very dirty stabs of synths and pourred a few drops of acid just when it’s time to break loose. More than a simple B-side New Love is a killer track that will make people fall into ecstasy on the dancefloor from Berlin to Barcelona! RELATED LINKS:
[1] Check It Out!Fat Freddys Drop DVD - Finally available!
Who ever has had the chance to witness New Zealand cult ban FAT FREDDYS DROP in concert will know what a high quality program they pack into an evening. Give them a chance and the seven piece band with singer DALLAS TAMAIRA aka JOE DUKIE and producer CHRIS FAIMUMU aka DJ FITCHIE at their centre will happily stand on stage for up to four or five hours constantly delighting the audience with extended live jams, bouncy MPC beats, crispy horn lines, the smooth vocals of JOE DUKIE and not least of all, a nice portion of self-irony. Long since superstars in their native New Zealand (FAT FREDDYS DROP were No. 1 in the national charts there on the strength of pre-sales alone), 2005 saw the global breakthrough for the groove-reggae ensemble with the release of their debut album Based On A True Story on Sonar Kollektiv (SK072CD / SK072LP). Following triumphant concerts throughout Europe late 2005 came a special highlight: Based On A True Story took the title Album Of The Year“ at taste-maker extraordinaire GILLES PETERSON's Worldwide Music Awards. These concert recordings are enriched with events that took place at each of the stops on the tour. RELATED LINKS:
[1] Get It Now!Two Banks Of Four - New at SK-Webshop!
The world of music is constantly taking new directions. There are always artists that strive to give a new breath of life to any form. Berlin’s Sonar Kollektiv understand this well and, with the creation their new Jazz Club collection, the label pushes things forward presenting artists with this spirit in mind. Thanks to CHRISTIAN PROMMER’S DRUMLESSON (SK162CD/jazz club), Sonar Kollektiv bridged the gap between two worlds Techno and Jazz that seemed so far away from each other. With the release of their recent Neujazz compilation (SK174CD/jazz club) Sonar Kollektiv went one step further and explored the emerging scene of club jazz music. On this occasion Sonar Kollektiv also introduce the newest member of the family; TWO BANKS OF FOUR. Their song Queen of Crows is fuelled with Soul and has a very special electronic touch to it. It was clear that TWO BANKS OF FOUR would be the perfect addition to the collective. RELATED LINKS:

[1] Check out the playlist!Computer Incarnations For World Peace II
With Computer Incarnations For World Peace II (SK185CD/elektrish), Sonar Kollektiv and GERD JANSON celebrate the great return of disco music on the dancefloors, presenting new productions this time. Following the critical acclaim of the Computer Incarnations for World Peace (SK140CD/LP) compilation, JAZZANOVA’s Sonar Kollektiv and GERD JANSON of Running Back Records team up once again to the greater joy of all the Disco music lovers. Whereas the first opus of Computer Incarnations for World Peace (SK140CD/LP) focussed on the early 80s with a selection of forgotten gems from the new wave era, the second episode shows the recent evolution of Disco music, with 13 tracks from artists and producers who proudly reasserted their love for this kind of music and injected some new blood in the veins of a genre that deserted the dance floors in the 90s. This sudden eviction from the clubs is partly due to the overexposure of Disco music in the late 70s and early 80s and to the use of the same music technology computers, samplers, analogue synthesizers, bass modules, and drum machines for other purposes and other styles of music such as Chicago House, Jackbeat and Detroit techno, more en vogue in the late 80s and the 90s RELATED LINKS:
